Advent Continued, Hanukah Observed, President Speaks

First Night

That should cover all the bases. Please continue with the beautiful music and let’s hope the speech from the Oval office doesn’t cause too much discordant noise. In the meantime: Chag Sameach! (Joyous Festival).

“ISIL does not speak for Islam,” Obama said. “They are thugs and killers.” He argued that allowing attacks like the one in San Bernardino to divide us is to allow the terrorists to achieve their aims. He insisted that the Muslim community and the broader American community have a responsibility to come together to fight ISIS. “Freedom is more powerful than fear,”

    from http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/06/politics/hillary-clinton-radical-islam/index.html
Hillary Clinton explained on Sunday that she won’t use the term “radical Islam” because it “sounds like we are declaring war against a religion.”
“It doesn’t do justice to the vast number of Muslims in our country and around the world who are peaceful people,” Clinton said in an appearance on ABC’s “This Week.”
“No. 2, it helps to create this clash of civilizations that is actually a recruiting tool for ISIS and other radical jihadists who use this as a way of saying, ‘We are in a war against the West — you must join us,’” she said.

imo, the gopers also use it as a fund raising tool as well as excite and incite their baser base.

Listen to the song that moved Pope Francis during the interreligious encounter at the Ground Zero memorial in New York.
Performed by The Young People’s Chorus of New York City, the song says: “Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me”.
“Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me. Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be. With God our Creator, family all are we; Let us walk with each other, in perfect harmony. Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now. With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow: To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally, Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me”.

      Blue,

Cruz is a nut, and certifiable at that. I’m not sure that Obama or anyone else for that matter has an answer for ISIS. which leads directly back to George W. Bush and his ill planned war in Iraq.
The question for republicans in general and republican presidential candidates in particular is, in the event that we went into Syria in any meaningful way, “will we be greeted as liberators?”.
I think that the answer is self evident. Been there, done that, didn’t work worth a damn!

Nevada Assemblywoman Michele Fiore — and maybe, if we send enough thoughts and prayers to the gods of comedy, the new One-L congresscuckoo in the House of Representatives — has a plan to win the war on terror. And the war on refugees, since they are one and the same. While stupid Democrats, and Nevada Republicans who are basically like Democrats because they are not as rightwing wackadoodle super-crazy as Fiore, want to roll out the welcome mat for Syrian refugees (except for the opposite of that), Fiore is going to take the fight to them, with her freedombags and her family arsenal of Babies’ First Bazookas:

I’m about to fly to Paris and shoot ’em in the head myself! I am not OK with Syrian refugees. I am not OK with terrorists. You know, I’m OK with putting them down. Blacken them out. Just put a piece of brass in their nocular [sic] cavity and end their miserable life. I’m good with that.

[….]Fiore detailed this can’t-fail plan during her weekly Saturday radio show, in which she explained that her failure to sign a letter saying STAY OUT, STOOPID SYRIAN REFUGEE TERRORISTS!!!1! was a mere oversight. Of course she hates them! Of course she wants to kill them dead, her own self! Duh, people.

scary article in journal titled Did Trump Just Win?
His Muslim-exclusion idea is likely to prove popular.
    here’s an excerpt from http://www.wsj.com/articles/did-trump-just-win-1449604108
Yale-Loehr is correct that the Trump proposal requires an act of Congress, but that act has already been enacted. Title 8, Section 1182 of the U.S. Code provides in relevant part:

Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.
    [….]
(The Hill’s Ben Kamisar reports that he asked the Trump campaign yesterday if the ban would also apply to U.S. citizens, and a spokesman replied: “Mr. Trump says, ‘everyone.’ ” Excluding U.S. citizens from re-entering the country would be plainly unconstitutional. Trump later backtracked, consistent with the generally offhand character of his campaign. It’s worth emphasizing that like “Muslim databases,” this very bad idea originated with a reporter, not Trump.)

The proposal itself, however, was not so offhand. Andrew Prokop of the young-adult website Vox argues that Trump had two “strategic objectives” in mind:

First, he ensures his continued dominance of the headlines.

Second, he proves to the segment of Americans who might secretly agree with him that, once again, he’s willing to say the things ordinary politicians of both parties won’t.

But why “secretly”? Another Vox article, written by Zack Beauchamp and also published yesterday, calls attention to a poll by the Public Religion Research Institute that asked respondents if they agreed with the statement “The values of Islam are at odds with American values and way of life.”

Vox’s headline announces the results for Republicans, 76% of whom agree. But the view is shared by a majority of all respondents (56%) and independents (57%) and a substantial minority of Democrats (43%). Blacks and Hispanics are evenly divided, and majorities of every Christian subpopulation, including black Protestants, agree.

“I’m a proud Muslim — but you don’t have to share my faith to share my disgust,” Abedin wrote. “Trump wants to literally write racism into our law books. His Islamophobia doesn’t reflect our nation’s values — it goes far enough to damage our country’s reputation and could even threaten our national security.”

“Oh my God,” Noah replied. “He’s white ISIS.”

When the host asked him how to combat the threat of “WHISIS,” Minhaj was more candid.

“Where are all the moderate white conservatives?” said the correspondent. “I mean, come on. They’ve got a responsibility to step up and speak out against WHISIS, because I’m sick of this.”

At the same time, though, Minhaj agreed with the real estate mogul that Muslims should stay out of the US — but only because they are in danger.

Pat, I know just a little about the Navy–where the Army and the Air Force worked diligently to make the most of one another’s capabilities, it was my impression that the Navy sailed blithely along ignoring us and the reality of anything more distant than 10-meters inland of the high tide line. Now, with all that said, here is my appreciation of the vessel.

The shape of the superstructure is generally contoured to be quite stealthy–until you look at the aft view including the hangar deck and stern with their right-angles. Those are definitely not stealthy and pose a gross vulnerability.

The ship is monstrously large for a destroyer–larger than WWII cruisers. Why? It’s named after Admiral Bud Zumwalt. He was an innovator’s innovator. I just can’t imagine him going this route.

I think what has made our political process and system go to hell is the professional political class – the whole array of consultants and the professional staff class. It used to be – people who worked on campaigns were volunteers – at the most you might get a job but it was about winning for the things you held dear and being a part of your community. Now it’s about being slick and making money.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), arguably the least liked and most ambitious member of the Senate who never hesitates to condemn fellow Republicans, won’t criticize Donald Trump for the noxious idea that we should ban all Muslims from coming into the United States. What’s the problem? Since he does not mind attacking fellow Republicans and he says he is a big supporter of the Constitution and religious liberty, this should be an easy call. But then, this line of inquiry assumes a level of principle and consistency that is utterly absent in Cruz’s character. It ignores his insatiable ambition and lack of reticence in using fear and venom to advance his own career.
    [….]
Whether or not Cruz’s tactics “work,” it does speak volumes about the sort of person who would wrap his arms around a candidate who has strayed from xenophobia to near-fascism. Really, Trump is a guy Cruz admires? Good to know — before anyone casts his vote.

International revulsion against Donald Trump over his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States has taken aim at his wallet.
A $6 billion golf community under construction in Dubai is removing his name from the project. Trump was tossed from a respected business network in Scotland, where the billionaire says he invested more than $300 million in golf courses and other developments. And Lifestyle, a retailer that does business in an enormous marketplace spanning the Middle East, India and Africa, stopped selling Trump branded products.
    [….]
And the Scottish government revoked Trump’s status as a GlobalScot ambassador, a position that conveys membership in a respected business network.

“Mr. Trump’s recent remarks have shown that he is no longer fit to be a business ambassador for Scotland,” a spokesman for Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said, according to the Scotsman newspaper.

Sturgeon has referred to Trump’s comments as “obnoxious and offensive,” according to the newspaper.

Trump, who owns two highly rated golf courses in Scotland, also lost his honorary doctorate at Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Scotland.

Here’s thing about Trump. He says seemingly outrageous things (like bad guys sneaking in with refugees), and he keeps being proven to be right.

He didn’t say no Muslims, just not until our officials figure out how to properly vet them. The media and other candidates are the ones highlighting the first part of his statement. He says very un-PC things, and some ugly things, but there are real bad guys out there.

Quite frankly, I’m more worried about that little turd, Paul Ryan, using his position to run for, and win, the WH. Sickens me every time I see him.

Now the bad guys may have their own passport printer and blank passports.
The little creep, Enrique, had a mail order bride (Russian, I think) as did the dead terrorist’s bro-in-law. It looks like we need to tighten up travel for everyone.

so if we are in that much danger of outsiders (rather than home grown ones) then close the borders temporarily to all while we adjust the entry vetting. put all current green card holders on notice and re-vet them. shut down container shipments from overseas, stop private weapons and large sums of money going in/out of the country. where do we stop and when will we ever be sure of our security?
