5 On Friday – Tell Me A Story

5 BOOKS

Five on Friday is the meme invented by our friend Travis of Trav’s Thoughts. To participate, simply choose five favorite songs to write about, sign in on Trav’s site and share your choices for others to enjoy.

I’ve made no secret of my love of story songs. They are the shortest of short stories, 32 bars of music and poetry that could become a full length book, play or movie. As with the best of movies and plays, these stories are often very intense. These are some of my favorites.

“Nobody knows when she started her skid, she was only 27 and she had five kids, could have been the whiskey could have been the pills, could have been the dreams she was trying to kill” – EmmyLou Harris – Red Dirt Girl

“We came in spastic Like tame-less horses, We left in plastic As numbered corpses” – Billy Joel – Goodnight Saigon

“Funny how tomorrow turns into yesterday. Funny how the mirror never lies. Funny how the clock turns back the other way, every time I look into his eyes”. – Amanda McBroom – Crimes of the Heart

“Now in another town You lead another life And now upstairs and down You’re someone else’s wife” – Mark Knopfler – A Place We Used To Live

“But oh how our dreams went bump in the night
And the voices downstairs getting into a fight
And the next day a silence you could cut with a knife
And feel like a blade at your throat” – Mary Chapin Carpenter – Only A Dream

About Me

Retired great grandmother living in the Northwest US. Former radio Public Service Director and National Accounts Manager.

I’m a hair-dishevelled heilan’ coo,
Hamish McKay be ma name;
Welcome tae this dreichet glen
I’m cursed tae ca’ ma hame.
Depending on the mood I’m in
I’ll raise ma horns on high,
An’ if I like the look o’ ye
I’ll likely let ye by.
But should I dinnae like the look
O’ ye, then tak great care,
I’ll raise ma horns on high again,
Go on, get oot o’there!
So whether welcome yae or nae,
I’ll raise these horns sae mean,
Then ye shall ken ma meaning
By the twinkle o’ ma een.
