5 On Friday – Gimme The Gold Edition

Take 5

5 on Friday is the wonderful meme invented by our friend Travis of Trav’s Thoughts. To join in, simply visit his site, sign in and share your five musical choices for the week.

I’ve been up to my eyeballs on-line in all the awards’ season movie bloggers, so this week is dedicated to the songs up for this year’s Oscar.

The Best Song Oscar is presented to the songwriters who have composed the best original song written specifically for a film. The performers of a song are not credited with the Academy Award unless they contributed either to music, lyrics or both in their own right. The song must be in the beginning credits, contained within the film or as a theme throughout or first in the credits. Preferred is when it enhances or contributes to the plot in some fashion. Songs written for any other purpose other than the particular film are not qualified.

“Before My Time” from Chasing Ice
Music and Lyric by J. Ralph

“Everybody Needs A Best Friend” from Ted
Music by Walter Murphy; Lyric by Seth MacFarlane

“Pi’s Lullaby” from Life of Pi
Music by Mychael Danna; Lyric by Bombay Jayashri

“Skyfall” from Skyfall
Music and Lyric by Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth

My personal favorite for the simple reason that it actually tells an important plot point in the musical:

“Suddenly” from Les Misérables
Music by Claude-Michel Schönberg; Lyric by Herbert Kretzmer and Alain Boublil

I’m not sure I like the musical additions to the Les Miz experience, but I did like the song Suddenly. It didn’t interrupt the flow and actually enhanced the transition from one age to the next.

The Life of Pi song and the Skyfall song are my faves on this celebration 5 on Friday, Jamie. By the way, in getting rid of about 500 spam comments from my blog, I also lost a few recent comments you’d left for me – whoops! Sorry.

Not a problem. They may have been pleasant but I doubt any of the comments were words of wisdom for the ages.

About Me

Retired great grandmother living in the Northwest US. Former radio Public Service Director and National Accounts Manager.

I’m a hair-dishevelled heilan’ coo,
Hamish McKay be ma name;
Welcome tae this dreichet glen
I’m cursed tae ca’ ma hame.
Depending on the mood I’m in
I’ll raise ma horns on high,
An’ if I like the look o’ ye
I’ll likely let ye by.
But should I dinnae like the look
O’ ye, then tak great care,
I’ll raise ma horns on high again,
Go on, get oot o’there!
So whether welcome yae or nae,
I’ll raise these horns sae mean,
Then ye shall ken ma meaning
By the twinkle o’ ma een.
